This article aims to (re)consider the constructed and experienced reality of the GDR. In this perspective, the interest in social research carried out by East-German academics at the time of socialism, which until now has systematically been ignored in the name of ideological and political assumptions, is part of an attempt to propose a new view of information and communication systems in this country subjected to massive flows of East- West communication. These studies, which used mainly opinion poll methods with forms of questioning and survey procedures adapted to the existence of ubiquitous political police - the Stasi (Staatssicherheit) -, constitute an important documentary base.
