Information and communication technologies, such as those used in the transportation of people and goods, are based on networks. Telecommunication networks, from Chappe's semaphore telegraph to the Internet, triggered a decisive change: information started flowing independently of the transportation of people and things; it freed itself from the heavy infrastructure required for that transport, and its economic and social role became essential. These two types of network, at the service of production-consumption and information-communication respectively, have the same primary function: enhancing control over space.
