Drawing on developments in the philosophy of ordinary language, the sociology of interaction, ethnomethodology and linguistic pragmatics, the paper argues for a new theoretical paradigm for the analysis of media « texts ». It postulates that communicative intentio- nality is the common ground that structures the nature of the relationship between broadcasters and audiences. Intentionality is retrievable, in texts, via inferential reasoning along lines specified by H.Paul Grice' s theory of communicative intentionality and the logic of conversation.
