Scornet Catherine.- An Example of Coercive Fertility Reduction, as seen in the Region of the Red River Delta in Viet Nam The fertility reduction policies implemented by successive Vietnamese governments since the start of the 1960s have taken account of the country's physical, economic and cultural characteristics, either to exploit or to overcome them. This article considers the Red River Delta, and shows how the mode of agricultural production (wet-rice cultivation) and the value system (ancestor worship) have been responsible for the choice of the birth control policy and the ways in which it has been applied.
