It has spread in different populations, but different aspects have not been related. In Eastern Europe (except the Czech regions and the GDR), the proportions of married persons did not increase at first: contrary to what happened east of a line drawn from Leningrad to Trieste, as Hajnal has shown. The demographic transition in Eastern Europe did not begin until the second half of the nineteenth century: about 1870 in the Czech lands and Eastern Germany, 1900 in Slovakia, between 1910 and 1920 in Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania, and I960 in Albania.
