Schwarz Karl. — The impact of family policies on population growth in West Germany and its Lander since World War II. The period index of total fertility in West Germany is one of the lowest in the world (1.6 children per woman), Yet, between 1950 and 1956 it increased from 2.10 to 2.51 children per woman. This sharp increase in fertility was closely related to a reduction in the age at marriage which led to a temporary change in the timing of births. It is difficult to assess the present impact of family policy on fertility. Family allowances are not negligible in amount; for example in 1986 these benefits came to DM50 for the first child, DM100 for the second, DM220 for the third and DM240 for fourth and subsequent children.
