From the turn of the century to the present day, the rate of urbanization in India has been increasing slowly (from 1 1 to 23 per cent), but the number of urban dwellers has grown sixfold (from 26 million in 1901 to 126 in 1981) The urban structures of the various States are very different : the largest agglomeration can contain from 8 per cent (Madhya Pradesh) to 64 per cent (Western Bengal) of the urban population.
