Pison Gilles. — A Demographic Study of Polygyny. In this paper three demographic problems consequent on the existence of polygyny are examined. The first relates to the functioning of the marriage market. Given that there is rough numerical equality between the sexes, how can a system of polygyny exist in practice ? An African population, the Peul Bandé of Eastern Senegal, is used to illustrate the different mechanisms which are involved in polygyny. There are two main factors : the first is a difference in the age at first marriage of men and women, the second a high frequency of remarriage among widows and divorced women, including rapid remarriage after the end of a marriage. The second question concerns the relation between polygyny and fertility. We distinguish between two types of effect : the effect on the individual woman (which appears negligible) and that on society as a whole (which definitely raises fertility). Polygyny raises the fertility of the population by increasing the period of their lives which women spend in a reproductive union. The third question relates to relations within the family and kinship in polygynous populations. Differences in the rhythm of male and female reproduction lead to a definite asymmetry between the father's kin and the mother's kin, and this has indirect effects on intermarriage between related individuals. Surprisingly, polygyny is still the predominant system in sub-Saharan Africa, partly because of demographic pressures on the marriage market which favour its continuance, and partly because of resistance to change within family and kin groups which are dependent on polygyny.PisoN Gilles. — La démographie de la polygamie. Trois questions démographiques soulevées par la polygamie sont examinées ici. La première concerne le fonctionnement du marché matrimonial : comment la polygamie s'accomode-t-elle de l'égalité numérique entre les sexes ? L'étude d'une population africaine prise comme exemple, les Peul Bandé du Sénégal Oriental, met en évidence les différents mécanismes de la polygamie, les principaux étant la différence d'âge au premier mariage entre hommes et femmes et le remariage rapide et intensif des veuves et divorcées. La deuxième question porte sur l'effet de la polygamie sur la fécondité. Deux types d'effet sont distingués, un effet individuel, qui semble négligeable, et un effet collectif, sans doute positif : la polygamie semble favoriser une fécondité féminine d'ensemble élevée, par le biais d'une forte durée moyenne passée en union. La troisième question concerne la famille et la parenté dans les populations polygames. Les écarts entre rythmes de reproduction masculine et féminine sont à l'origine d'une asymétrie marquée de la parenté entre côté paternel et côté maternel et retentissent indirectement sur les mariages entre apparentés. La polygamie, dominante en Afrique au sud du Sahara, s'y maintient de façon étonnante; cela résulte des contraintes démographiques qui s'exercent sur le marché matrimonial et qui ne permettent pas sa disparition soudaine et aussi des résistances au changement de la famille et de la parenté, intimement liées à la polygamie.Pison Gilles. — Demografía de la poligamia. En este articulo se examinan très aspectos de la poligamia. En primer lugar se analiza el funcionamiento del mercado matrimonial. De que manera la poligamia se adapta a la igualdad entre los sexos ? El estudio de una poblaciôn africana tomada como ejemplo, los Peul Bandé del Senegal Oriental, pone en evidencia los diferentes mecanismos de la poligamia. Los principales son : la diferencia de edad entre hombres y mujeres en el primer matrimonio y la forma rápida e intensiva en que las viudas y divorciadas contraen nuevas nupcias. El segundo aspecto se refiere al efecto de la poligamia sobre la fecundidad. En este caso se pueden diferenciar dos tipos de efectos : uno individual que es prácticamente despreciable y otro colectivo, que es indudablemente positivo. La poligamia parece favorecer una fecundidad femenina de conjunto elevada, ya que finalmente las mujeres pasan un largo tiempo en union conyugal. El ultimo aspecto se refiere a la familia y al parentesco en las poblaciones poligamas. Las diferencias entre ritmos de reproduction masculina y femenina se encuentran en el origen de una notoria asimetria en el parentesco entre el lado paterno y el materno, que afecta indirectamente los matrimonios entre parientes. La poligamia, dominante en Africa al sur del Sahara, se mantiene de una manera sorprendente. Este hecho es el resultado de los impedimentos demográficos que afectan al mercado matrimonial y que no permiten su rápida desaparición. Es la consecuencia también de las resistencias al cambio de la estructura familiar y del parentesco, intimamente asociados a la poligamia.Pison Gilles. La démographie de la polygamie.
