Pison Gilles. — A Demographic Study of Polygyny. In this paper three demographic problems consequent on the existence of polygyny are examined. The first relates to the functioning of the marriage market. Given that there is rough numerical equality between the sexes, how can a system of polygyny exist in practice ? An African population, the Peul Bandé of Eastern Senegal, is used to illustrate the different mechanisms which are involved in polygyny. There are two main factors : the first is a difference in the age at first marriage of men and women, the second a high frequency of remarriage among widows and divorced women, including rapid remarriage after the end of a marriage.
