Gutierrez Hector and Houdaille Jacques. — Maternal Mortality in France During the 18th Century. A family reconstitution study for 39 villages in the nominal sample of the study carried out by IN ED into the development of the French population between 1700 and 1829 makes it possible to study the extent, regional fluctuations and development of maternal mortality. All deaths of women which occurred within two months of their giving birth were considered to be maternal deaths. An allowance needed to be made for the understatement of births of children who were baptized privately and did not appear in the baptismal register, either because they were stillborn or lived for only a very short time.
