Between 1954 and 1962, migration was the dominant feature of population movement in towns with populations of more than 50,000 inhabitants. After that date, natural increase became more important. Natural increase was relatively stable and differed little between towns. Net migration, on the other hand, declined in 95 per cent of the towns, and this resulted in a lower rate of growth and, in some cases, in actual population decline.
