Levy Claude. Premature Births : the Psychological and Sociological Context. This paper illustrates some of the psychological, economic and social characteristics which predispose women to give birth prematurely. It is based on the results of a survey carried out by INED between 1972 and 1974 and on previous research into the social aspects of prematurity. The risk of a premature birth is increased by adverse living conditions which make careful supervision of the pregnancy difficult, by lack of information on the part of the woman and by a refusal on her part to accept the pregnancy, as well as by absence of ante-natal supervision and control.
