The Mont Blanc tunnel fire accident showed that disaster evacuation procedures and safety implementations could not guarantee the security within the tunnel. Thus, the FP6-project 'Virtual Fires' was created to evaluate the fire safety of a tunnel via a physically based simulation. This realistic simulation and visualisation provides an opportunity to supply the fire brigades with different training scenarios. This project Virtual Fires concentrated on the simulation, visualisation and control of fires in road and railway tunnels. Two aspects for future addition on this project are, the evacuation of victims and to resolve the complexity of general buildings in contrast to tunnels
