The Death-Rate of Diocesan Bishops Between 1220 and 1458 in the Present Territory of France Jean-Noël BIRABEN Although they were a privileged category, the bishops of the Middle Ages form quite a large population, and one that is sufficiently well known for it to be possible to measure their death rate under acceptable scientific conditions. From 1220 onwards, the positions of the holders of at least 65 % of the sees are well known (graph 1). In this paper we have constructed a chronological record over 239 years (1220-1458) during which the number of bishops dying in France (column 5 of the table appended hereto) varied from 0 (in 1393) to 30 (in 1348 during the Black Death) and the death rate (column 6) from 0 to 267 per 1000.
