Summary The increase of fertility rates observed until 1964 in most Western countries was a consequence of earlier marriages and also of shorter intervals between marriage and the birth of the first child; this rejuvenation of legitimate fertility was less the result of shorter births intervals than that of increasing proportion of children of first and second ranks in the couples' descendances. Annual rates of fertility were bound to diminish as this trend could not fail to come to an end and this decline is felt more strongly due to a continuous fertility decrease in large families.
