Given the lack of consistency in the use of terms, solid theoretical foundations for defining and selecting competences are needed. Accordingly, this article depicts and illustrates terms such as competence, skills and abilities. It offers a variety of different definitions and deals with the difference of competence and competency. After providing several general sources which can be used for the generation of competence models, the contribution finally arrives at a framework competence model to be used in company contexts
