In this paper a current overview of the development of Neolithic and Chalcolithic pottery kilns in the Middle East is given in order to initiate further, more detailed kiln studies. In the context of early pyrotechnology several issues concerning technical, economic and social aspects of kiln construction and operation are addressed.L' évolution des fours de potiers au Proche-Orient pendant le Néolithique et le Chalcolithique est présentée dans le but de susciter des études plus fines des fours.
