Since many timber-framed houses are listed, a practicable compromise between thermal rehabilitation and preservation of the historic appearance and fabric must be found. Mostly the thermal protection can only be achieved by applying thermal insulation to the interior side of the exterior wall. But since interior insulation lowers the temperature between insulation layer and filling material and thus raises the humidity level, such measures are not without risk. The choice of a suitable type of insulation and an appropriate type of assembly must be made with proper consideration of the hygrothermal conditions at the timberframed façade.
