The recent institutional practice of the sacrifice of animals among Muslims living in Europe gives the opportunity for thinking about the anthropological status of the sacrifice from the reading of the islamic lawsmaking texts. The notion of "sacrifice" is here exposed in various ways and the terminology shows to be instructive, in particular for the converting period to islam of society of Bedouin breeders.
