The Fraunhofer-Institute for tool machines and forming technology IWU belongs to the most important research and development associations for production science in the automotive and engineering branches worldwide. Lightweight engineering, especially in the field of sheet metal and tube forming, is one of the core competencies. Here the main focus lies on the tempered forming of tubes and profiles. An air hardening steel LH800 could be successfully press hardened. The analysis of the part showed a tensile strength of 1200 MPa. Further experiments with alternative materials such as 34MnB5 and MW1000L show potentials for tensile strengths up to 1900 MPa
