Partant de ce constat, Karoline Postel-Vinay montre comment le Japon insulaire de la fin des années 70, « géant économique, nain politique », a progressivement évolué vers un pays bien davantage ouvert vers l'international. Ainsi, la coopération avec l'Union européenne ne se limite plus aujourd'hui aux échanges économiques. De même, le Japon joue un rôle de plus en plus actif sur la scène politique asiatique.
