By reducing flow resistance, for example with aircraft, significant fuel savings can be obtained. The frictional flow resistance of surfaces can be reduced by forming appropriate microstructures on their surface. This can be achieved by application of a paint coating suitably patterned by embossing and at the same time, partially hardened. This allows a very reproducible surface structure to be formed. In a second stage, a final curing is carried out. This process allows formation of surface features patterned at the nanometre level, in some cases with undercuts
