The United States : Strengths and Weaknesses, by Dominique Moisi The inescapable dilemma of the United States is that a maintenance of their présent role without a rise in domestic costs is untenable. But America's role in the world will remain irreplaceable, in the foreseeable future as its assets are unique, be it in Europe (East as well as West), Asia — where it is unlikely that Japan can replace the United States as a new « great power » — or the Middle-East. As the Palestinian-Israeli dimension is returning to the forefront, American intervention will become more vital.
