The Outlook for ASEAN, by Jean-Pierre Gomane The ASEAN countries are now experiencing something of a crisis which may perhaps only be growing pains. French business men and politicians are at last taking a more systematic and less detached interest in this region of the world. The overall rhythm of its growth is slowing down considerably as the region could not expect to escape indefinitely front world recession, given the open nature of its économies. Economie woes are not the only problems in question, but they aggravate the uncertainties of the international conjuncture. For this reason, it has become urgent to diagnose the outlook for ASEAN.C'est au moment où l'ASEAN subit une certaine crise qui n'est peut-être qu'une crise de croissance, que, en France, les nommes d'affaires et les hommes d'Etat, sinon l'opinion, s'intéressent enfin à cette région du monde d'une manière plus systématique et moins désinvolte qu'ils ne l'ont fait jusqu'à présent. Le rythme général de la course à la croissance se ralentit notablement dans cette région qui ne pouvait indéfiniment échapper à la crise mondiale, en raison même du caractère extraverti de ses activités économiques.
