The Iran-Irak War: Paradoxes and Idiosyncrasies, by Shahram Chubin The Iran-Irak war, which broke out in September 1980, is the first important conflict in the Persian Gulf as a consequence of the Iranian revolution, and differs from other possible Third World conflicts in a number of significant ways. It involves two well-armed countries rich enough to restock their arsenals. Its causes are ideological differences and not territorial claims or "secular rivalries". It has produced unexpected changes in the political alignments of the region. There is little chance that it will end in a clear military victory.
