Airtightness is considered an important factor on all levels of the building envelope, i.e. overall building envelope, on a component level and on a material level. Airtightness of the building envelope is a defining factor to achieve energy efficient and durable buildings, i.e. reduced risk of condensation and water infiltration through the building envelope, reduced risk of cold draughts and it improves the correct functioning of the HVAC-system. Over the past decades the amount of airtightness tests for newly built buildings in Belgium has significantly increased.
