Using a divided cell, elctrodeposition tests were carried out using the chloride, sulphate and acetate salts of trivalent chromium as well as chromium ammonium alum. The chloride and acetate solutions yielded no usable chromium deposits. by contrast, the chromium sulphate and ammonium chromium alum electrolytes, operated at 40 ºC, yielded satisfactory metallic deposits with a thickness of up to 60 µm and hardness values up to 900 HV. However the chromium sulphate solution proved easier to use than the alum solutions. In both cases, there is an absence of suitable chromium salts which can be used for electrodeposition of chromium without an intermediate processing stage.
