Russian Nationalism, by Alexis Berelowitch At the beginning of perestroika, Russian society could be divided into two camps. The first wanted to limit the scope of reform, preserve the Soviet state, and maintain opposition to the West. The other, reformist, camp (later divided into centrists and radicals) included social democrats and advocates of liberal capitalism. After the putsch, the collapse of communist power, and the disappearance of the USSR, there was a redefinition of positions and a realignment of the different political and ideological forces.
