An Enlarged Germany in an Enlarged Europe, by Alfred Grosser Until 1989, the postwar period could be divided in two. The first very brief period consisted of the allies, who had won the war, occupying and domina-ting the defeated Germany and came to an end between 1947 and 1949. The second, began with the creation of NATO and of the two separate German States. No such fundamental changes took place during thèse latter years until 1989 to 1991, when Germany was reunified, subject countries without and within the USSR gained their freedom and the Soviet Union crumbled.
