The thermal management of lithium ion batteries is a central element for operation safety and high lifetime. A combined integration of mentioned thermal management and measures for crash safety into one battery package is desirable. The use of a latent heat accumulator should level temperature spikes and allow for high uniformity of temperature while reducing the energy demand of an active cooling system. The phase-change material is embedded in a matrix of closed-cell metal foam with microcracks to allow for a safe and well-directed application as well as sufficient heat transport.
