The development of a structural health monitoring system is described which monitors the condition of rotor blades of wind turbines and simultaneously detects structural changes before irreparable damages occur. The SHM system is based on a combination of independent measuring techniques from the fields of guided waves in the ultrasonic range and the low frequency modal analysis. Statements regarding overall behaviour of the rotor blade structure are possible by applying modal analysis and highly loaded areas are additionally monitored by guided waves in the ultrasonic range. The functionality of the SHM system has been proved by a fatique test when the development of damages could be observed
