The present review article focused on analyzing the importance of formative and summative assessment in the educational process and their effects on student learning. Databases such as Scopus, Scielo, and Latindex were used to select review and original articles published in the last 5 years by authors from different parts of the world, including Latin America. Regarding the results obtained, it was found that formative and summative assessment are complementary evaluation techniques that can significantly improve the educational process and student learning.
