Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica is said to be the birthplace of Jamaican tourism. When Captain Lorenzo Dow Baker, president and director of the Boston Fruit Company, built the island’s first hotel, the Queen Anne Titchfield Hotel in 1891. In 1890, the Jamaica Hotels Law was passed to encourage hotel construction to create the needed lodgings for the Jamaica International Exhibition planned for 1891. The hotel was once owned by Hollywood film star Errol Flynn. In the late 1960s, the hotel was destroyed by fire.
