The need for FE-simulation and the occurring work packages during optimization of coated forming tools are described. After the coating material selection concerning the concrete application material parameters are identified. The occurring problems due to the small thickness (thickness in the order of 2 ?m) are discussed. Also the particular numerical problems during the solution of the numerical models are mentioned. Finally simulation results are shown and modifications in variant simulations are analyzed
