La transmission sociale chez les primates

Summary : Social transmission among non-human primates. Social transmission could occur within the same generation (intra-generation transmission) or between successive generations (inter-generations transmission : from the mother to the offspring). Observational learning is the main mechanism involved for social transmission to occur. Many authors assume that imitation does exist in non-human primates, because they consider that observational and imitation learning refer to the same process. But, others consider that observational learning may be due either to local enhancement or to imitation. Local enhancement could probably explain inter-generation transmission, while intra-generation transmission could be due to imitation. Nevertheless, it has to be stressed that recent studies have shown that true imitation has probably been overesti-mate in non-human primates. Moreover, it seems that imitation does exist in new-born human infants ; it could be possible that it is specifically a human cognitive ability. Finally, the problem of species-specific mental abilities in primates is discussed. It may be concluded that inter- and intra-generation transmissions have been involved in the cultural evolution of both non-human primates and of Homo. Key-words : social transmission, imitation, local enhancement, primates.Résumé La transmission sociale chez les primates peut apparaître à l'intérieur d'une même génération (transmission intra-génération), ou entre deux générations successives (transmission inter-générations, en général de la mère aux jeunes). Les processus cognitifs sous-jacents impliquent un apprentissage par observation et sont de deux types : soit une accentuation locale, soit une imitation. Des problèmes de définition ont conduit vraisemblablement à une surestimation de l'existence de capacités d'imitation chez les primates. Des données récentes laissent en effet penser que cette capacité serait très restreinte, voire inexistante chez les primates non humains ; en revanche, elle se manifesterait de façon très précoce chez le nouveau-né humain.
