Summary : Cognitive factors in reading acquisition : A critical review of comparisons of good and bad readers. This critical review analyse research on individual differences in reading acquisition. Studies of working memory, syntactic awareness, the mental lexicon and the capture of phonological information are presented and analysed. With the example of a study by Juel et al. (198b) we emphasize that future research should apply a multidimensional longitudinal approach for a better understanding of reading acquisition. However, these studies must be accompanied with research on ivriting for a comprehension of individual differences in learning to read.
