Summary : Eye movement control in reading : current issues. We discuss five topical questions which are crucial for a better under-standing of eye movement control in reading. Oculomotor behaviour is considered as an activity organized efficiently in time and space. In order to analyze the processes controlling this activity, we start out from a tentative chronology of the different operations assumed to occur during a fixation in reading. This raises the problems of « serial vs. parallel functioning » of these operations and, at a more local level of processing, of the mechanisms and operations controlling the « when » and « where » decisions of saccade programming.
