Summary The present study investigates, in 4 and 5 year-old children (N = 2 X 64), the relations between homologous and mirror localizations performed in a localization task and the orientation criteria used in a placement task. In both tasks, the child is provided with two identical 7x7 square grids. In the localization task, he has to indicate in the copy grid, which location is the same as a specified location in the model grid. The placement task requires the subject to put an object « in front of, behind, on the left, on the right of » the same grids. The results show that the children who use different orientation criteria for each grid perform more mirror localizations than those who use identical orientation criteria. Furthermore, t...
