Summary Spatial reference systems in children are most often studied through reproduction iasks, in which information pick-up and reproduction processes are intermingled. The procedure used in the present study dissociates these two aspects in time, the exploration phase preceding the reproduction phase. Oculomotor activity has been recorded in 5-, 7- and 9-year old children and in adults (20 subjects in each group) during a 10-second exploration phase in which the localization of three elements in a frame of reference must be memorized.
