Summary The purpose of this research is to analyze conditions affecting use of a spatial reference system, consisting of a square grid, in a reproduction task where location must be combined with the other characteristics of the configurations (relative position and order of arrangement). 5, 6, and 7 years old children (24 subjects per age group) were presented with one of two experimental conditions : either a 7x7 square grid or blank cards. Ten different configurations each having three varying elements and requiring different levels of coordinate complexity were presented to each child. The results show an interaction between subjecls' age and the two experimental conditions. The grid constitutes a disturbing element in terms of precisio...
