Summary The present study investigated the ability of children, aged 4, 5 and 6 years, to use a system of reference while performing a spatial localization task. A pair of cards, one serving as a standard and the other as a copy, were placed in one of three positions : 1. The copy directly to the right of the standard ; 2. The copy directly below the standard ; 3. The copy diagonally below the standard. Both of the cards depicted a grid which could be used as a scale of measurement. The results indicated that 4 year olds used only one axis of reference, while 6 year olds used two axes regardless of the position of the pair of cards.
