Summary The present work is part of a series of research work bearing on the effort of control exercised by the subject over his own activity. The aim here was to show that this effort depends on the expected outcome of the activity ; it increases with the probability of failure such as this latter appears to the subject himself. The notion of effort of control is here defined as the effort for quality in executing the task. The very simple task employed furnishes a sensitive index of the speed-precision attitude. It was carried out by 46 psychology students in a situation with very littlt personal involvement.
