Emotions play a fundamental role in human communication. Particularly music and films are capable of eliciting emotions which unfold and vary over time. However, in order to communicate emotions with sounds, a) subjects should consistently and reliably associate the sound with a certain emotion, independent of what happened before and b) sounds should be perceived similarly by different subjects. We presented subjects with a series of sounds from the International Affective Digitized Sounds database which changed every 5 seconds.
