Abstract Irrigated or Non-Irrigated Cultivation in Murcia, Spain, 16th- 18th Centuries. Reasons for a Choice. A strategic site facing Islam during the early Middle Ages, Murcia of 1500 was sparsely settled, consisting of small fortified sites where small huertas were formed and using non-cultivated areas for fixed or shifting herding. United Iberia did not change this territorial organization. Regional trade required products for export such as silk and wool, stimulating local oligachs to promote the irrigated cultivation of mulberries, but also to preserve natural pastures.
