Abstract. Social expertise and the interpretation of statistical material. Swedish economists and the question of housing in the early 1930s. This article focuses on one dimension of the role of Swedish academic economists as experts in the field of social issues in the early 1930s. It seeks to demonstrate how the interpretation path of statistical data dealing with the state of housing allows actors to recast the problem of social housing. We study the 1932-1933 inquiry into housing conditions in Gothemburg, which sought to provide measurement tools to evidence different classes of need, whilst forgeing a rationalised conception of social policy.
