Abstract : Production and Productivity in English Agriculture, 1086-1871. This paper considers alternative measures of agricultural production and productivity and then presents new estimates of population numbers, land use, grain output, land and labour productivity for England from the eleventh to the nineteenth centuries. It reviews some general problems with the sources available to produce such estimates, and explores five issues which emerge from the data : the size of the medieval population and its food base ; the effect of the mix of crops and consumption patterns on the amount of food available ; changes in the crop mix and their relationship to improving productivity ; the limitations of the available statistics, especially with ...
