François Giligny. The recognition of ceramics shapes : a typological formalised approach. A method for the morphological classification of ceramics, the « sliced » method, is presented. The results of morphological analysis of Chalcolithic assemblages, confronted with other archaeological data, demonstrate the possibilities of extrinsic interpretations (chronological change, production organisation, spatial and functional distribution within a domestic unit). The importance of separate treatment of different archaeological problems such as morphological, functional, technological and stylistic analysis is underlined, since this leads to a more rigorous overview.François Giligny.
