In the early decades of the nineteenth century, social problems became a major issue in the Rouen area. This situation calls for the growing resort to social statistics in reviews of learned circles, in administrative reports or annual registers. From examples concerning abandoned children and criminal statistics, one can perceive the close link between the yearning to turn facts into figures and the ideological trends of the time. The use of mathematical data in the social field also conveys the emerging of a statistics-minded approach, from the end of the eighteenth century onwards, as well as a definite « mathematisation » of society, however incomplete and controversial.Evelyne Barbin et Yannick Marec. Cette situation entraîne l'utilisation de plus en plus fréquente de statistiques sociales dans les revues des sociétés savantes, les rapports administratifs ou les annuaires. A partir d'exemples concernant les enfants abandonnés et la statistique criminelle, on perçoit comment la volonté de tout mesurer est tributaire des débats idéologiques du temps. L'appel aux données chiffrées dans le domaine social traduit aussi le développement d'une mentalité statistique à partir de la fin du XVIIIe siècle ainsi qu'une certaine « mathématisation » de la société qui demeure cependant partielle et contestée.Barbin Evelyne, Marec Yannick.
