Abstract. The Birth of a State Statistic. The Egyptian Census of 1848. The census of 1846-1848 marked the birth of population statistics in Egypt, yet the document has never been analysed or published. Since the Cairo National Archives holds the complete set of primary documents, they may be examined 150 years later for the ways contempory inquiries were conducted, and seen as an operation responding to the criteria of the time. This was the first census of individuals, rather than households, from which the public administration published standardized list of personal characteristics.
