Michel Vovelle. The « Sans-Culottes » in Marseilles. This statistical approach of the « Sans-Culottes » in Marseilles draws on data from a wide variety of sources. The cross-referencing of this data compiled in a computer tile of 5,000 sub-files places the sociological analysis in a diachronic perspective. Thus, the reader is led to study the global behavior of this popular movement over a period of two years (1792-1794) in terms of continuity and change. Far from reproducing a stereotyped portrait of the typical « Sans-Culotte », the analysis provides a contrasting, even disturbing, view of the people of Marseilles during these decisive years of the French Revolution.
