Some commentators deem that Thucydides had a cyclical notion of time. How should this be considered ? Certain repetitions in his narrative and lexical or thematic correspondences back up such a notion, which is strengthened by the importance given to the pattern of progress and decline of cities. However, one may object to that interpretation : neither the word "circle" nor any equivalent term applied to time ever occur in the lexicon, the unexpected plays an important part in actions and speeches, as well as the complexity of changes. One must not mistake the point of view of men for that of the historian who, in his enunciation, perceives the unceasing flow of time.
